International Institute of Christian Discipleship (IICD) Community Services & Urban Ministry Curriculum

A Testament

to Excellence
ACS began as the 'Dorcas and Benevolent Association,' composed of women providing clothes, food, financial support and services to needy families in churches and in their communities. This is why until the World War Era, the humanitarian work of local Seventh-day Adventist churches was known as 'Dorcas Society.' Ellen White, a Seventh-day Adventist Church pioneer in the city of Takoma was well regarded as a person who was always doing good and helping those in need (Acts 9:36-42).
The Dorcas Societies wanted to involve their husbands in the Good Samaritan Society was organized.
The General Conference broadened the concept of service to urban ministry. This new organization was named Seventh-day Adventist Health and Welfare Services (SAWS).
The name was changed to Adventist Community Services (ACS).
The church organized the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA). International for service activities outside of North America more effectively. ADRA became the official international relief organization (NGO) that works at a global level connecting the Seventh-day Adventist Church to provide international relief and development.
ACS signs deals in ministry with ACS International under the General Conference Sabbath School and Personal Ministry Department to focus on Adventists in community service and outreach ministries at the local church level.
The mission of ACS International is to motivate, equip, and mobilize Seventh-day Adventist church members worldwide to meet unconditionally the expressed needs of people around them, thus fostering a trust relationship between Adventist churches and their surrounding communities, and nurturing people toward a restored, abundant life in Jesus (MH 17:1; John 10:10).
The vision of ACS International is that every Seventh-day Adventist church be a transforming agent in its community, following the method of Jesus to bring help and hope through ministries of compassion in His name (see Luke 4:16-21; MH 143).
Due to budgetary constraints, the General Conference Sabbath School and Personal Ministries Department no longer includes a specific staff member devoted to ACS International promotion and training. However, the department continues to support the work of Adventist Community Services generally through key resources.
